On behalf of the scientific organizing committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to join us for the international conference “Technology and Medicine – Adaptive Systems (TMAS)” which will be held from 21 to 23 September 2016 at the University of Potsdam, Campus Griebnitzsee, Germany. The TMAS Conference is organized under the scope of the Helmholtz Cross-Programme Initiative (CPI) “Technology and Medicine – Adaptive Systems” which bundles the competences of researchers from the fields of biomaterials and imaging technologies of eight research centers of the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest scientific organization. The central research of this CPI is aimed at investigating the next generation of technology platforms for adaptive systems in diagnosis and medical treatment. With its main topics Adaptive Biomaterials, Smart Tracer, and Adaptive Imaging Methods, this initiating conference will be concentrated on the interconnection between the complementing fields of biomaterial science and imaging technologies.
Modern therapeutic concepts focus at an efficient individually tailored treatment of each patient. This can only be realized by innovative technologies adaptive to the specific situation. Technologies such as biomaterials and imaging methods build the basis for future progress in medicine. The next generation implants can actively communicate with the surrounding tissue and can adapt to physiological changes. Such an implementation of adaptivity into biomaterials requires an improved understanding of the in vivo behavior of biomaterials. In this regard, novel multifunctional and smart tracers are needed for the simultaneous allocation of anatomical/morphologic and functional information by providing an optimized scale of spatial resolution and/or time window for investigation. Adaptive imaging methods will allow a more sensitive and specific characterization of pathological changes in tissues and organs, e.g., by rendering imaging signals dependent on physiological changes such as the pH-value or tissue oxygenation, by magnetic labeling of specific cells, and by imaging of drug delivery by particular systems.
An exciting conference program is awaiting you with five plenary lectures from highly distinguished guests, 32 invited speakers, and several short oral presentations spread over specialized sessions for particular subject areas. Three parallel sessions will offer a considerable variety of topics within the main subject areas, brought together in specifically designed joint sessions on each conference day. The conference will be rounded up by the awarding of best poster and best presentation prizes. Abstract submissions are welcome for those wishing to contribute scientifically to our poster session or oral presentations.
Embedded in the rich scientific landscape of the Berlin-Brandenburg region with its renowned universities and research institutions, the TMAS conference will bring together scientists from all over the world to discuss future trends in Technology and Medicine. Potsdam provides a most stimulating venue with a high potential for innovation as it is characterized by a tight network of scientific institutes, technology-oriented corporations, research-based companies and entrepreneur centres playing an important role in bridging scientific and industrial cooperations. In this course, the conference will give participants numerous opportunities for informal networking and a platform for stimulating discussions about potential future trends in Technology and Medicine.
